Designed by norm.

Honest, natural, warm.

At norm., we place great importance on our in-house approach to spatial design to maximize the experience of “spending time with oneself.” Our design philosophy emphasizes simplicity and intentionality, creating spaces that calm the mind and encourage deep introspection.

hotel norm. ao offers an invitation to slow down, reconnect with yourself, and rediscover balance. Surrounded by tranquil gardens, a serene lake, and a lush, misty forest, this private resort hotel integrates design and nature to create a wellness-focused sanctuary for body and mind.

Guided by the philosophy of “materials in their natural state,” hotel norm. ao proposes a wellness experience that speaks to the senses. Light filters through vertical lattices, casting shadows that reflect the passage of time, while the textures of raw stone and smooth oak are carefully chosen to evoke a sense of connection to nature and comfort.

This is a place where design and nature coexist in harmony—a space to reclaim your inner peace and discover the healing power of simplicity.

Tea Room

Floor cushions surrounding a low table are designed to encourage guests to slow down and experience the traditions of Japanese tea ceremony culture. This intimate space is surrounded by large expanses of glass, bringing the garden's vibrant colors inside, especially the striking red maple trees. The walls are lined with delicate green tiles, subtly reflecting the lush greenery outside, adding depth and texture while naturally connecting the interior and exterior. Skylights and high ceilings further enhance the sense of openness, allowing natural light to flood the entire room, creating a sense of ethereal tranquility. The harmony of these materials and architectural elements creates an atmosphere where guests can connect with both culture and serenity.

Living Space

The living room is set back from the kitchen and tea room, subtly separating the spaces without the use of walls or doors. Reminiscent of a 1950s conversation pit, this cozy sunken space is an inviting place to gather and relax. A large oak niche displays carefully selected artworks, while the wide white wall displays floral arrangements, art and even doubles as a giant projector screen. Without a roll-down screen, the projector can transform the space into a cinematic experience when needed, but reverts to a quiet, non-digital living space when not in use.

Lake View
Bedrooms

With a minimalist oak bed platform, soft green headboard accents and expansive windows, the bedrooms are designed as tranquil retreats. Forest and lake views serve as a canvas for seasonal changes, filling the room with natural light and seasonal colours. The master bedroom offers an even more special experience, with expansive windows overlooking the panoramic lake, depicting the ever-changing landscape of water and sky.

Dining Room

At the heart of the homely space is a monolithic stone countertop, bringing a sense of solidity to the interior. It acts as a visual anchor, tactilely separating the warmth of the oak cabinetry, the neutral texture of the concrete flooring, and the soft texture of the off-white walls. The backpack, finished with green tiles, injects a quiet rhythm into the space, subtly hinting at Japanese tradition.

Spring Bath & Steam Sauna

The dark stones of the hot springs blend with the lush vegetation beyond, creating a tranquil composition where the strength and beauty of nature coexist. Botanical spaces bring life and vibrancy to this space designed for serenity and reflection. Soft, subtle lighting bathes the space in a gentle glow, enhancing the calm and meditative atmosphere without taking away from the natural beauty of the surroundings. Openable skylights let in fresh air and natural light, giving the feeling of being in an open-air bath despite the cavernous space, deepening the connection to nature. This subtle design immerses guests in the space.
